The crew should know the building before they get there
Every property in your district has one record in RedAlert, and everyone works from it. The inspector who writes a violation, the officer who updates a preplan after a walkthrough, and the crew responding at two in the morning are all looking at the same data. Not a copy, not a nightly sync, the same record, on the same map.
The silo that gets people hurt
Most departments keep prevention and operations in separate systems. The fire marshal's office has one database of properties. The trucks have another. When an inspector finds fifty gallons of solvent in a back room, a hoarding situation, a compromised stairwell in an active construction zone, or a dry hydrant, it goes in the prevention system, and the crew that responds to that address never sees it.
RedAlert doesn't work that way. Prevention data and response data are the same data. An inspector documents a hazard on Tuesday, and the next alert to that address carries it.
Authored anywhere, delivered everywhere
Preplans are built and managed in RedAlert Desktop, and crews update them from the field in RedAlert Mobile when a walkthrough turns up something new, which is where most of the updating actually happens. Hazardous materials are documented by type, quantity, and location, with NFPA data. Utility shut-offs, site plans, occupancy contacts, and special-needs occupants live on the same record. Complex sites like malls and campuses use parent and child property relationships instead of being forced into one flat record.
That data reaches the people who need it three ways: on the phone in RedAlert Responder, on the apparatus tablet in RedAlert MDT before arrival, and on the station wall through RedAlert Station Board.
Your map, not a generic one
The mapping layers are yours. Hydrants, FDCs, and any point of interest your department decides matters: gates and access roads, Knox box locations, standpipe connections, helicopter landing zones, target hazards, mutual aid boundaries, drafting sites, whatever your district actually needs plotted. Departments build the layers around how they operate rather than around what a vendor decided to include.
Hydrants carry their status onto the map. Take one out of service and its icon changes to black in Responder and on the MDT, so an officer sizing up a fire can see which water is usable without reading a word. Preplans attach primary, secondary, and tertiary hydrants to each property, so the plan says which hydrant to take first and where to go if it's down.
Update anything on a map layer and the next alert reflects it. There's no second dataset, no re-import, and no wondering whether what's on the tablet is current.

Common questions
Do our responders see what our inspectors find?
Yes, and it's the main reason to keep prevention and operations in one system. Inspectors and responders work from the same property record, so hazardous materials, hoarding conditions, construction hazards, dry hydrants, and utility shut-offs appear in RedAlert Responder and on the MDT when a call comes in at that address. There's no export, no nightly sync, and no chance the crew is looking at last year's information.
Where do preplans get built?
Either place. They can be authored and edited in RedAlert Desktop, and most departments do a lot of the updating in the field through RedAlert Mobile, since crews are the ones walking the building.
Can we map our own points of interest?
Yes. Map layers are built around your district. Hydrants and FDCs are the common ones, but departments plot solar panels, EV charging stations, Knox box locations, standpipe connections, landing zones, drafting sites, target hazards, and anything else you want show on the map.
How do complex properties work?
Parent and child property relationships handle malls, campuses, apartment complexes, and multi-building industrial sites, so a specific unit carries its own record while rolling up to the site.
What do crews actually see on the way to a call?
On a phone, RedAlert Responder shows the mapping with hydrants and preplan data. On the apparatus tablet, RedAlert MDT shows the full preplan: hazards, utility shut-offs, site plans, and occupancy information, alongside the live CAD feed. You can also see the last time you went to a call at that address, since it is documented against the property record. The idea is that nobody steps off the truck learning about the building for the first time.
Can we report on prevention and response together?
Yes, and it's something a two-system department simply cannot do. Because inspections and incidents share a property record, you can pull inspection history against actual incident history at the same addresses, which is useful for target-hazard programs and for grant narratives.
