White Paper NFIRS to NERIS
A detailed look at the upcoming transition from the National Fire Incident Reporting System (NFIRS) to the more advanced National Emergency Response Information System (NERIS). With NERIS set to launch in December 2025, fire departments must prepare for a shift that promises improved data accuracy, enhanced emergency response, and better compliance with federal requirements. Grab our white paper to learn how this new system will transform fire reporting and what your department needs to know to stay ahead.

Back in February 2024, we provided an early look at the NFIRS-to-NERIS transition, outlining anticipated changes in data fields and addressing key implementation hurdles, such as system integration and training. Now that Phase 1 onboarding concluded in November 2024, and with Phase 2 scheduled to begin in February 2025, we have a sharper and more complete understanding of the reporting transformations ahead. Learn how fire departments like yours can now gain clarity on what to expect, from new data requirements to enhanced reporting capabilities.

As a fire professional, one of your most crucial tasks is fire incident reporting. Currently, fire departments send reports to the National Fire Incident Reporting System (NFIRS). However, the U.S. Fire Administration (USFA) is working on an improved reporting system called the National Emergency Response Information System (NERIS). Read our guide to answer your questions and help you get ready to make the switch.

The “NERIS Version 1: Platform Launch and National Rollout” webinar, held on October 29, 2024, marked an exciting leap forward in fire safety technology. Hosted by the Fire Safety Research Institute (FSRI) in partnership with DHS Science and Technology Directorate and the US Fire Administration, the event introduced the highly anticipated NERIS Version 1. The recorded session offers a comprehensive look at how NERIS V1 aims to transform fire department operations and safety standards nationwide.
Preparing Your Department For This Reporting Shift
If you’re a fire professional in the United States, you’re undoubtedly familiar with the National Fire Incident Reporting System (NFIRS). It has been around since the mid-1970s. Since then, it has been the country’s only way of combining fire incident response and safety data. However, that will soon change. The U.S. Fire Department is working with national officials to create a different solution — the National Emergency Response Information System (NERIS). Designed with first responders in mind, the new platform will take reporting to the next level.
In May 2024, Alpine’s CTO Steve Scibienski and CEO Jack Lally attended a pivotal meeting at Esri HQ, hosted by the Fire Service Research Institute and organized by NERIS. Industry leaders discussed enhancing emergency response through improved data integration. Key topics included new NERIS tools, data standardization, and collaboration strategies for a safer future.
The transition from NFIRS 5.0 to NERIS can indeed be overwhelming, and the RedNMX Alpine Software team understands the challenges you may face during this period of change. Alpine is committed to making this transition as smooth as possible for you and your Fire Department, our valued clients.
